Jinja

Jinja:

Jinja is a capital city of Uganda of the District of the same name. The city has 93,060 inhabitants according to 2005 census data. It is located in the southeast region of the country on the shores of Lake Victoria and has grown as a sports and fishing center. Currently, some industries that operate within the food and textile environments have also been developed.

Jinja is situated along the northern shores of Lake Victoria, near the White Nile source. This city sits at an average elevation of 1,203 meters above sea level.

In 1954, the Nalubaale Power Station was inaugurated, which feeds on the taking of the Owen waterfalls that artificially expanded Lake Victoria, submerging the Ripon waterfalls. That since its discovery by John Hanning Speke in 1862 was considered the sources of the Nile River.

Through WIEGO, and in collaboration with Nurturing Uganda, a project has been developed that is allowing Jinja women to support themselves and pay for education for their children.

Jinja is the second-largest economy of Uganda. Earlier, factories and industries chose Jinja as its base as Owen Falls Dam power station was nearby. Since early 2000, the economy of Jinja has picked up steadily. The major economic activity takes place in the central business district.

Uganda is a great unknown in Central Africa. A country that opened up to tourism not many years ago and that has a bit of everything. National parks were to see African fauna, geographical landmarks such as the Nile fountains, always green equatorial landscapes and the intense life on its roads, towns, and markets that one expects to find in the heart of Africa.

If we look back in the history of the Jinja, it was planned under colonial rule in the year 1948 by Ernst May who was a German architect and also an urban planner. He may also design Kampala for an urban planning scheme that he was called “neighborhood units”.

In Jinja, there are 3 methods of public transportation – Special hire taxis, matau, and Boda Boda. You can go anywhere in the city easily but make sure you agree on the fare before your ride begins.
