12-Day Best of Tanzanian Wildlife & Kilimanjaro Trekking Safari.In Twelve Days Machame-Route Lake Manyara Ngorongoro. March, April, and May are the months with long rains and should be avoided. November is usually short rains but it is not often raining all days so Climbing is possible. The best Months for climbing Mount Kilimanjaro are January, February, and also August, and September. July can be colder and November to December can be wet. January to February is the warmest months, almost clear of clouds each evening and morning.

Itinerary

Day 1: Kilimanjaro to Moshi

 

Accommodation: Keys Hotels Limited Uru Road, Moshi / Similar

Guest will be picked up at Arusha or kilimanjaro airport and drive to to Tarangire NP, half day game drive, Tarangire spotting the Big Five on a wildlife safari, visiting a local village to learn about Maasai culture, and sampling mouth-watering Tanzanian cuisine. The majestic snow-capped peak of Kilimanjaro towers over this little African town. Moshi serves as the gateway to the Kilimanjaro National Park and provides an excellent base from which to climb Mount Kilimanjaro, Africa’s highest mountain.

The Keys Hotel has views of Kilimanjaro and is a popular destination for climbers. The restaurant offers a buffet breakfast, an a la Carte menu service and occasional barbecues. The bar includes all basic international types of wines, local beers and wines, as well as soft drinks.


Day 2: Moshi to Mount Kilimanjaro

 

Accommodation: Machame Camp, Mount Kilimanjaro / Similar

Guest will have breakfast and drive to Machame village/gate. After registering at the gate, you will begin by entering the rain forest. Living up to its name, there is a strong possibility of rain in the forest, which will transform the trail into a very soggy, muddy and slippery experience. You will have a welcome packed lunch stop about half way and will reach the Machame camping area in the late afternoon. The crew will set everything out at your campsite and all you must do is sit back, relax and enjoy the great outdoors.

Machame Gate (1490m) To Machame Camp (2980m)

Meals: Lunch and Dinner

Overnight: Machame Camp

The Machame Camp is one of the first pitstops along the Machame Route of Mount Kilimanjaro. From the Machame Gate, climbers will hike for about 7 hours through the rainforest to get to Machame Camp. They would overnight at the camp before heading through the moorland towards Shira Camp.


Day 3: Mount Kilimanjaro To Shira Camp

 

Accommodation: Shira Camp, Mount Kilimanjaro / Similar

After an early breakfast you will climb for an hour or so to the top of the forest and then for 2 hours at a gentler gradient through the moorland zone. After a short lunch and rest, you will continue up a rocky ridge onto the stunning Shira plateau, due west of Kibo, from which you will be able to see the breathtaking glaciers. After a short hike you will reach the Shira campsite at 3,840m. The climbing crew will provide you with a tasty meal and you will then have plenty of time to sit back and relax.

Machame Camp (2980m) To Shira Camp (3840m)

Hiking Time: Approximately Six Hours

Distance: Approximately Nine Kilometers

Habitat: Moorland

Meals: Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner

Overnight: Shira Camp

Shira Camp forms part of the second leg of the journey up Mount Kilimanjaro. There are 2 camps – Shira Camp 1 on west side and Shira Camp 2 on the east. The Shira Plateau landscape features a tropical rainforest and shrubland where a range of flora and fauna species are found. Climbers might also spot the White Naped Raven.


Day 4: To Shira Camp To Lava Tower

 

Accommodation: Barranco Camp, Mount Kilimanjaro / Similar

The route now turns east into a semi desert and rocky landscape surrounding Lava Tower. After lunch you will climb a rocky scree path to the Lava Tower (4630m). This five hour walk will probably be your hardest day so far and some climbers may begin to feel the altitude. However our experienced team will coach you through the symptoms and provide you with all the advice and support you need. After lunch you descend again by almost 680m to the Barranco camping area, whilst it may seem illogical to be going down at this point, you will quickly appreciate its true acclimatisation benefit. This descent to Barranco camp takes about 2 hours and offers great opportunities to take some beautiful photographs of the Western Breach and Breach Wall. The camp is situated in a valley below the Breach and Great Barranco Wall, which should provide you with a memorable sunset.

Shira (At 3840m) To Lava Tower (At 4630m) To Barranco Camp (At 3950m)

Hiking Time: Approximately Seven Hours

Distance: Approximately Fifteen Kilometers

Habitat: Semi-Desert

Meals: Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner

Overnight: Barranco Camp

Barranco Camp is the third pitstop along the Machame Route climbing up Mount Kilimanjaro. This area of the mountain is semi-desert and the camp is set in a valley close to the Great Barranco Wall.


Day 5: Lava Tower To Karanga Camp

 

Accommodation: Karanga Camp, Mount Kilimanjaro / Similar

Very early in the morning (midnight to 2am), we continue our way to the summit between the Rebmann and Ratzel glaciers. You head in a northwesterly direction and ascend through heavy scree towards Stella Point on the crater rim. This is the most mentally and physically challenging portion of the trek. At Stella Point (5685m / 18,652 ft), you will stop for a short rest and will be rewarded with the most magnificent sunrise you are ever likely to see (weather permitting). From Stella Point, you may encounter snow all they way on your 1 hour ascent to the summit. At Uhuru Peak, you have reached the highest point on Mount Kilimanjaro and the continent of Africa. From the summit, we now make our descent continuing straight down to the Mweka Hut camp site, stopping at Barafu for lunch. Later in the evening, we enjoy our last dinner on the mountain and a well earned sleep.

Barranco Camp (3950m) To Karanga Camp (4099m)

Hiking Time: Approximatly Seven Hours

Distance: Approximately Thirteen Kilometres

Habitat: Alpine Desert

Barafu Camp to Summit to Mweka

Meals: Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner

Included Activities: Hiking

Overnight: Barafu Camp

Mount Kilimanjaro climbers would approach Barafu camp at about the 5th day of the journey. The word ‘barafu’ is the Swahili word for ‘ice’, which refers to the cold climate at this altitude.


Day 6: Karanga Camp To Mweka

 

Accommodation: Barafu Camp, Mount Kilimanjaro / Similar

This next day is similarly a short hike (approx. 3-4hrs). You will make your way over the ridges and valleys and join up with the Mweka route. After another hour or so, you reach Barafu (Swahili for Ice) Hut. This camp gives you a real experience of the icy elements. The camp is exposed to the ever-present gales the tents are pitched on a narrow, stony ridge. You will appreciate your warm and cosy sleeping bags on this night! The summit is now only a further 1,345m up and you will make the final ascent the same night. The team will help you to prepare your equipment and clothing for your summit attempt. You will go to bed at about 19h00 and try to get some precious rest and sleep.

Karanga Camp (4099m) To Barafu Camp (4550m)

Hiking Time: Approximately Seven Hours

Distance: Approximately Thirteen Kilometers

Habitat: Alpine Desert

Meals: Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner

Overnight: Mweka Camp

Mweka Camp is the final campsite on the journey up Mount Kilimanjaro. Climbers would arrive here after a 7 hour hike from Summit Uhuru Peak.


Day 7: Mweka to Mount Kilimanjaro

 

Accommodation: Machame Camp, Mweka / Similar

This next day is similarly a short hike (approx. 3-4hrs). You will make your way over the ridges and valleys and join up with the Mweka route. After another hour or so, you reach Barafu (Swahili for Ice) Hut. This camp gives you a real experience of the icy elements. Day 8: Moshi to Lake Manyara (214.6 km)

 

Accommodation: Panorama Safari Camp, Lake Manyara National Park / Similar

Guest will Meet the tour guide in Arusha town, who will deliver a short safari info briefing, after which, they travel to the Lake Manyara National Park. And will arrive around lunch at the lodge. After lunch guest will head into the Lake Manyara National Park. This impressive park is one of Tanzania’s most dramatically located wildlife areas, consisting of a massive but shallow soda lake (covering two-thirds of the park) at the foot of the Great Rift Valley’s western escarpment. The park’s varied habitat attracts a wide variety of animals, including one of Africa’s largest concentrations of elephants, Manyara’s famous tree-climbing lions, as well as large flocks of flamingos attracted by the algae in the lake.

Panorama Safari Camp is located right above Lake Manyara and the Lake Manyara National Park, which are famous for the tree-climbing lions. Accommodation options include African Igloos and permanent tents with communal bathrooms. Guests can enjoy homemade meals at the on-site restaurant and bar which offers authentic African food made of high quality of meat and fresh vegetables. The camp’s staff can organise safari drives and day tours.


Day 9: Lake Manyara to Seronera (139.1 km)

 

Accommodation: Seronera Campsite, Seronera / Similar

Guest will be picked up from the airport and depart to the serengeti on arrival. The Seronera region, in the central Serengeti, is set directly on the Great Migration route, and offers excellent viewing of this incredible annual phenomenon, when countless wildebeest flood across the plains. Arriving at serengeti and guest will go on a game drive to the camp.

Overnight: Seronera Campsite

Located in the Central Serengeti region of Tanzania, the Seronera Campsite is accessible by both road and air. Shower and lavatory facilities are available at the campsite. The Seronera River Valley area is a noted habitat of the leopard, lion and the cheetah. With sufficient food and water to sustain the wildlife, the migration stops in the area, during the year.


Day 10: Serengeti National Park to Ngorongoro Conservation Area (22.0 km)

 

Accommodation: Simba Campsite A, Ngorongoro Conservation Area / Similar

This day guest will have breakfast and enjoy morning game drive in Serengeti National Park and then depart to Ngorongoro Conservation area with game drive where the guest can take pictures and will have lunch box on the road. Ngorongoro is a special area of which it’s a conservation area and not a National Park. The whole area is managed for both animals and local Masaai people who graze their cattle alongside the indigenous wildlife. upon arrival guest will have dinner and overnight at your lodge.

Situated in the Ngorongoro Crater region of Northern Tanzania, Simba Campsite A is a large public camping ground. The campsite is located on the crater rim and offers fantastic views of the area, as well as an excellent point from which to spot bush pigs. Featuring shower and lavatory facilities as well as a cooking area and dining area, the campsite is a convenient stopping point on the way to the Serengeti.


Day 11: Ngorongoro Crater to Moshi (262.8 km)

 

Accommodation: Keys Hotels Limited Uru Road, Moshi / Similar

After breakfast, half day game drive at Ngorongoro Crater. There is a very high possibility of spotting the big 5 lion, rhino, elephant, buffalo and leopard. Lunch will take place at the picnic site at the crater floor. In the afternoon, drive back to Moshi.
