There can never be a dull moment when you are in Livingstone. The place is famous for being the base town from where tourists visit the world-famous Victoria falls which is in the border of Zambia or Zimbabwe. The river Zambesi flows gracefully on the side of the town. Livingstone had the distinction of being the capital of Northern Rhodesia. The city also is the gateway to Mosi-Oa-Tunya National Park which is adjacent to the falls.
Livingstone also has the airport where you can arrive from Lusaka. The town still has the Edwardian grandeur that it enjoyed before the capital was moved to Lusaka. It is a quiet town offering a lot of good hotels and lodges to stay in. Tourists can enjoy a variety of activities from the small town which include boating, fishing, walking safaris, whitewater rafting, kayaking, etc. The banks of the river are best for seeing crocodiles and hippos.
Attractions In Livingstone
There is no shortage of activities in Livingstone. The Victoria Falls is, of course, the biggest of the attractions in the area. You can see the falls in all its magnificence and also walk to the river very close to where the Zambesi plunges to the falls. The Boiling Pot which is a large whirlpool on the river can be seen. You can walk across the bridge amid the mists from the falls. The falls are part of the Mosi-Oa-Tunya National Park where you can see a variety of wild animals.
If you are bored with wildlife tourism, Livingstone offers other attractions like the Railway and Gateway Jewish Museum. Here you can see many old locomotives that were in use during the 19th century. You can also climb on a few of them and examine their insides. The museum is also proof of the thriving Jewish community here during the 1890s while they were fleeing from Lithuania. There is also an old Jewish Synagogue which is now a church and a Jewish cemetery, both point to the times when the community was living here.
What To Do In Livingstone?
The question about what to do doesn’t arise in this town. There are enough activities for everyone here. You can go on a safari in the Mosi-Oa-Tunya National Park which has an abundance of many wild animals. You can see the elephants crossing the river Zambesi. A walk through the national park is also possible. The visit to Victoria Falls is naturally part of the program for all tourists.
One of the most thrilling experiences for the adventurous is the visit to Livingstone Island where you can bathe in Devil’s Pool. It is a natural pool on the edge of the Victoria Falls. You can dive into the pool and take a view from its edge. This activity is possible only from August to January when the climate is dry. When the water level is very low you can even walk across to the Devil’s Pool.

When Should You Visit Livingstone?
It is best to visit the place between April and October when the weather is dry and you can see the park and the animals this time.
