This 17 days Kenya Wildlife Photography & Birdwatching Safari will take you to Thika, Mt. Kenya, Samburu, Lake Nakuru, Lake Naivasha, Lake Baringo, Lake Victoria and Masai Mara. From the world’s biggest bird, the Ostrich, to spectacular flamingos that congregate in their millions at the various Lakes of the Great Rift Valley and camouflage them in pink. Itinerary

Day 1: Nairobi to Mount Kenya 198 km

 

Accommodation: Serena Mountain Lodge, Mount Kenya / Similar

Guest will be picked up at their accommodation at 09h00 hours and drive through lush coffee and tea plantations to the Serena Mountain Lodge in the Mount Kenya region. Guest will have amazing views of the wildlife right at your door as they are driving on the road. Mount Kenya is rising up from the heart of the Kenyan landscape, the snow-capped Mount Kenya is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It is Africa’s second highest mountain reaching an impressive 5199 metres in height, which is an awe-inspiring sight. Visitors can explore its surrounding forests, trout-filled streams and game reserve; or for the more adventurous, summit the peak. While Mount Kilimanjaro is an easier climb, Mount Kenya is more of a challenge as it has a higher technical difficulty, however, Point Lenana can be easily reached by a fit hiker.

Sailing like an ark amid the primeval forests of Kenya’s highest mountain, Mount Kenya, this timbered tree hotel offers champagne-clear mountain air, sweeping views across the tree-canopy, sparkling trout streams, and gentle forest walks. Located at 2,134 metres above sea level, on the lower slopes of the mountain, the lodge is cool, tranquil and hushed for optimum game-sightings. The open-air viewing-deck looks down on to its own water hole and salt-lick, which attracts numerous herds of elephant and buffalo. There is also a tunnel leading to a photo-hide, which offers spectacular viewing and photographic opportunities just metres away from the wildlife at the water hole.


Day 2: Mount Kenya to Samburu National Reserve 153.2 km

Guest will have early breakfast and departure to Samburu National Reserve which is Resting on the banks of the Ewaso Ng’iro River and neighbouring the Buffalo Springs National Park, Samburu National Reserve is remote, hot and arid. The reserve spans over 165 square kilometres of spectacularly scenic landscape featuring rugged hills, undulating plains and riverine forests. After checking in guest will have leisure time and go on afternoon game drive.

Day 3: Samburu National Reserve Area

Guest will still spend one more day exploring the fascinating Samburu National Reserve. Early morning and afternoon game drives give you the chance to view some of the world’s most spectacular and exciting terrain. Enjoy this time spent game viewing – particularly the chance to see the “Samburu Five”: Grevy’s zebra, reticulated giraffe, Beisa Oryx, Somali ostrich and the long-necked antelope. You may also opt to visit a nearby cultural area.

Ashnil Samburu Camp sits in Buffalo Springs Game Reserve which takes its name from an oasis of crystal clear water at the western end of the reserve. It is separated from Samburu National Reserve by Ewaso Nyiro River and is less hilly and dense yet equally very attractive.


Day 4: Samburu National Reserve Area to Aberdare 164.9 k

Guest will wake up to a nice breakfast and depart back to Aberdare which is Situated in the magnificent Aberdare Highlands, northeast of Nairobi, Aberdare is an amazing highland safari area featuring mountains, lush forests and steep ravines teeming with the best of Africa’s varied wildlife including the majestic elephant and rhino. This area is made up of the Abedare Mountain Range, which forms part of the eastern side of the Great Rift Valley as well as a vast savanna covered moorland plateau. Guest will make in way to Sweetwaters, a luxury tented camp. After checking in guest will have leisure time and go on an afternoon game drive. (night game drives are optional,and their cost is not included).

Partially obscured, nestled 6500ft above sea level and providing the perfect haven of serenity is the Naro Moru River Lodge. Being home to over 200 different species of birds and tree hyraxes this log-cabin based lodge has been “The base for climbing Mt. Kenya” due to the proximity to the mountain and the tailor-made mountain climbing itineraries, backed by the experienced guiding and porters team. The riverside lodge is surrounded by indigenous bush that gives it the ambience and uniqueness for which it is popular.


Day 5: Aberdare to Nakuru 134.4km

 

Accommodation: Sarova Lion Hill Game Lodge, Nakuru / Similar

Guest will have early breakfast and departure to lake nakuru whereby they will arrive around lunch. Nakuru is a city on the shores of western Kenya’s Lake Nakuru, within a reserve that sprawls across almost 200 square kilometres. It is the capital of Nakuru County, located in the Great Rift Valley. Ten kilometres from town lies the massive Menengai Crater. Later in the afternoon guest will go on an afternoon game drive.

Overnight: Sarova Lion Hill Game Lodge

Sarova Lion Hill Game Lodge is nestled along the Lion Hill overlooking the spectacular flamingo pink rimmed Lake Nakuru. Its location affords panoramic views of the lake and the picturesque Lake Nakuru National Park. A short two-hour drive from Nairobi, Sarova Lion Hill Game Lodge is a favourite with residents and visitors to Kenya.

Sarova Lion Hill Game Lodge is cleverly laid out in such a way that most rooms and sitting areas afford stunning views of the lake and the park. The Lodge incorporates natural landscaping with tall acacia trees, winding walkways and greens dotted with bird feeds. The Lodge is a natural haven for bird life and attracts over 50 species of birds amongst the 400 species that inhabit the Park.

Lake Nakuru National Park was created in 1968 to protect the huge flocks of over of the lesser flamingo that breed and nest at the edge of Lake Nakuru, giving it the characteristic pink rim. Lake Nakuru National Park, located at an altitude of 4,000-5,767 feet above sea level, covers 188 square kilometres of land of great ecological diversity – from lake water, woodland, bush grassland, to rocky ridges. The park is home to not just the lesser flamingo but over 400 species of birds and one of the few places to see the endangered white rhino. Other wildlife at the park includes lions, leopards, zebra, gazelles, eland, giraffe and the hyrax.


Day 6: Nakuru to Lake Baringo National Park 220.6km

Guest will have early breakfast and spent morning hours in Lake Nakuru National park. More bird possibilities include Hamerkop, Cape and Hottentot Teals, Tawny Eagle, Kittlitz’s Plover, Red-chested and Klaas’ Cuckoos, Nyanza Swift, Greater Honeyguide, White-browed Robin-chat, Arrow-marked Babbler, Grey-crested Helmet-shrike, Ruppell’s Glossy-starling, and Golden-breasted Bunting. Guest will later depart to the next destination which is a fresh-water lake in the north called Lake Baringo.

Here the combination of a large lake in semi-desert country and the nearby Baringo cliffs provide the perfect habitat for a great diversity of bird life. Overnight at lake Baringo Soi Lodge.

Day 7: Lake Baringo National Park

Specialities in this area are Dark Chanting-goshawk, Heuglin’s Courser, Northern White-faced Owl, Greyish Eagle-owl, Slender-tailed Nightjar, Jackson’s and Hemprich’s Hornbills, Black-throated Barbet, Red-fronted Warbler, Brown-tailed Chat, Somali Tit, Beautiful Sunbird, Bristle-crowned Starling, Golden-backed and Little Weavers, Northern Masked-weaver and Northern Red Bishop. Other possibilities in the area include Lanner Falcon, Verreaux’s Eagle, Blue-naped Mousebird, Madagascar Bee-eater, Red-fronted Barbet, Northern Crombec, Pygmy Batis, Cardinal Quelea and Eastern Paradise-whydah.

Soi Safari Lodge boasts to be a most beautiful lodge in the Great Rift Valley, built to the latest design. And since it’s opening, our clients have termed it Home away from home. Its surroundings are a bushy acacia at the lakeshore and the rocky dry sparsely populated and remote semi arid environment. The lodge enjoys a spectacular view of the fresh water of Lake Baringo. Its beautifully enchanted islands include the famous Laikipia escarpment across the lake.


Day 8: Lake Baringo National Park to Kakamega Forest 57.8km

 

This morning after some final birding around the Lake Baringo area guest will depart to Kakamega Rainforest in the western highlands and will have some stops route for special interest birds in the Kerio Valley. These may include Black-headed Lapwing, Meyer’s Parrot, White-crested Turaco, African Black and Horus Swifts, African Pygmy-kingfisher, Double-toothed Barbet, Long-billed Pipit, Silverbird, Brown Babbler, White-crested Helmet-shrike, Black-headed Gonolek, Chestnut-crowned Sparrow-weaver and Reichard’s Seedeater. Kakamega Rainforest is the eastern most extension of the Congo Rainforest and is without doubt the best birding destination in the entire country.

Many of the species here are found nowhere else in Kenya and the list of possibilities is seemingly endless. Such avian gems as White-spotted Flufftail, Great Blue Turaco, Bar-tailed Trogon, Blue-headed Bee-eater, Black-and-white-casqued Hornbill, Grey-throated, Yellow-spotted and Yellow-billed Barbets.

Day 9: Lake Baringo National Park to Kakamega Forest

 

Accommodation: Rondo Retreat Centre, Kakamega Forest National Reserve / Similar

This day guest will spend more time in Kakamega Forest to explore more. the remnant of a remnant of the Guineo-Congolian Equatorial forest that stretched across all Central Africa. This wonderful forest is home many mammals including Bush Pig, Giant Forest Hedgehog, Colobus monkey, Debrazza Monkey and Pottos, among other; but of course, it’s most famed for it’s beautiful array of birdlife. Some of the birds to be seen here include the Blue-headed Bee-eater, Ross’s Turaco, Turner’s Eremomela and the endangered (due to the illegal pet trade) Grey Parrot. It’s also home to the gorgeous Great Blue Turaco.

Rondo Retreat Centre is located in the heart of the Kakamega Rainforest in Kenya. Accommodation consists of a variety of cottages, each equipped with bedrooms with en-suite bathrooms, a living area and verandahs. Guest can enjoy delicious meals served in the dining areas. Activities such as hiking, bird watching and wildlife sighting can be enjoyed on the property.


Day 10: Kakamega Forest to Kisumu 288.6km

 

Accommodation: Imperial Hotel Kisumu, Kisumu / Similar

This morning guest will have early breakfast and depart for Kisumu on the north eastern shore of Lake Victoria where we will search for the specialities of the area, some of which are found only in the papyrus swamps surrounding this great lake. Species you are likely to see are African Openbill and Papyrus Canary. From Lake Victoria we will proceed to the Masai Mara Game Reserve in south-western Kenya.

Here guest will find a wide variety of bird life, as well as some of the most spectacular mammals on the continent. Birds that can be expected in this area of the Mara are Rufous-bellied Heron, Saddle-billed Stork, Wahlberg’s Eagle, Coqui and Red-necked Francolins, Grey Crowned-crane, Temminck’s Courser, Wattled Lapwing, Ross’ and Schalow’s Turaco, Malachite and Woodland Kingfishers, Yellow-throated Longclaw, Rufous-chested Swallow, Familiar Chat, Silverbird, Red-faced, Trilling and Tabora Cisticolas, Green-capped Eremomela, Black-crowned Tchagra, Hildebrandt’s and Violet-backed Starlings and Cinnamon-breasted Bunting.

Day 11: Kisumu to Masai Mara 309.4km

Guest will drive in the morning at 9:00am to the Maasai Mara Game Reserve. You will have the opportunity to enjoy your lunch on your way and arrive in time for an evening game drive.

The Masai Mara together with Tanzania’s Serengeti form Africa’s most famous wildlife park, the Masai Mara National Reserve. The image of acacia trees dotting endless grass plains epitomises Africa for many, then add a Maasai warrior and some cattle to the picture and the conversation need go no further. The undeniable highlight of the Masai Mara National Reserve is undoubtedly the annual wildebeest migration traversing the vast plains of the Serengeti and the Masai Mara. Your dinner and overnight stay will be at a camp with hot showers and flush toilets.

Day 12: Masai Mara area

Guest will wake up to a nice breakfast and then proceed on a full day of game viewing within the reserve. The landscape here is scenic savannah grassland on rolling hills. The reserve is the best park for game viewing in Kenya as it has an extensive road and track network that allows for close range viewing and photography. Break for your picnic lunch by the hippo pool, looking out for resident hippos and crocodiles. Your dinner and overnight will be at the camp.

Day 13: Masai Mara area

Located on the slopes of Oloolaimitia Hills, this is one of the first lodges to be built in the Masai Mara Game Reserve. Guests are drawn to the ethnic design of this Lodge, which itself is surrounded by a landscape rich in flora, from wild olive, bitter aloe vera, croton and Mexican trees.

The Lodge has 50 round buildings , each with two rooms. Eight of the 50 cottages have interconnecting rooms. The honeymoon suite is situated at the top of the property providing an uninterrupted view. This very spacious suite has a king-size bed, a shower and a sunken bath. A spacious verandah is perfect to watch the sunset or enjoy private meals. There are 12 suites, each with a large living area, spacious bedroom with either one lking size bed or two queen-size beds, mosquito nets, en-suite bathroom with shower, coffee table with chairs and a mini-bar on request . The standard rooms equally have a choice of one king size bed or two queen size beds with mosquito nets and en-suite bathrooms with shower. Each has a verandah with two safari chairs.


Day 14: Masai Mara area to Lake Naivasha 287.7 km

Guest will have a nice breakfast and pack up to depart to Lake Naivasha which is the highest of the Great Rift Valley Lakes and despite having no outlet, it is one of only two Rift Valley freshwater lakes. This beautiful lake is fringed by papyrus and acacia trees, a unique geologic landscape and supports a vast array of over 450 bird species. It serves as the main drinking hole for wildlife in the area such as zebra, eland, hippo, waterbuck, buffalo and much more. After checking in guest will go n afternoon game drive before dinner.

Overnight: Lake Naivasha Sopa Resort

Naivasha is a Masai name given to the area, denoting the characteristics of the lake.

21 cottages are built in a crescent shape, and each has four rooms, totaling 80 standard rooms and Two suites. Two of these rooms are suitable for the physically challenged. Six of the 21 cottages have interconnecting rooms on the ground floor.

Rock gardens feature vibrantly coloured flowers, which give a beautiful contrast to the greenery of the well-manicured lawns. Monkeys play on the lawns and different species of birds chip in the trees. Pathways wind between the open lawns and frangipanis, with aloes and proteas growing in abundance. The acacia trees are plentiful in this area and provide welcome shade. The stone exterior walls of the cottages are carried into the rooms. Ground-floor rooms have two queen-size beds and a sunken living room at the front, which opens out on to the beautifully manicured lawns.


Day 15: Lake Naivasha to Nairobi

Guest will have breakfast and depart to Nairobi which is situated in along the Nairobi River in beautiful Kenya, the capital of Nairobi is East Africa’s most cosmopolitan city. It serves as an excellent starting point for African safari trips around Kenya. Nairobi is Africa’s 4th largest city and is a vibrant and exciting place, and although it has developed a reputation which keeps tourist visits brief, there are some fascinating attractions. Guest will take advantage of a private vehicle and guide to explore Nairobi National Park and other points of interest.

Day 16: Nairobi Area

This day after breakfast guide will pick you up and escort you to Daphne Sheldrick’s Elephant Sanctuary. Guest will admire the playful nature of these young elephants and experience a close encounter with giants of the African wilderness. Next, we move on to the Giraffe Sanctuary to see the rare Rothschild’s Giraffe before proceeding for lunch at the Ololo Safari Lodge.
